The Matawan Council agreed to cut $500,000 from the Matawan-Aberdeen School District tax levy. About 1,335 voters defeated the district's $44.33-million tax levy on April 15. Only about 1,103 voted in support of the expenditure.Matawan Mayor Paul Buccellato said the school district offered two solutions to cut money and the borough chose the option that cut more money.
According to the mayor, about $34,000 would be reduced or eliminated from the late bus transportation budget, $50,000 taken from general supplies, $41,000 cut from technology and putting off repairs to the Cambridge Drive roof to save $375,000. The officials said the roof was not in dire condition and is over the administrative offices, not students.
Aberdeen will also have to agree to the cuts. The Township Clerk has not returned calls to confirm the Committee's agreement on the sum.
Although the amount was agreed upon by the Matawan Council during its workshop meeting on Thursday, May 15, it will have to be approved during the council's meeting on Monday, May 19.
